What It's All About

          Just as there are hundreds of breeds and millions of dog owners, so there are a great many communities of dog owners, who have created communities around shared interests, lifestyles, a choice of breed, membership in an organization, and other factors.  There are also major distinctions in the dog world that people make, such as:

	between pet owners and dog show participants
	between people active in the dog show community and those who just show their dogs
	between owners of different types or groups of dogs
	between the owners of different breeds of dogs

          The World of Dogs site is designed to look at these many different communities that have emerged and discuss some major findings about this world of dogs.  It also features a discussion on some key topics about the members of this world, such as:

	the relationship between one's choice of a breed and personality, interests, and lifestyle
	occupational communities made up of people who work with dogs, such as the police
	the role of experts and authorities in helping dog owners understand, train, and care for dogs
	the special places that people create for or about their dogs
	the growing world of services and products devoted to dog owners
	the power of the media and advertising in creating images of dogs
	the use of art and imagery
	the many organizations that support dog ownership, from virtual to organized groups
	a selected bibliography of books and research in the field.

          Each of the following sections will feature a brief introduction to these categories to promote still further research.   I have included some of my past research in this field, along with lots of links to other sites with even more information on this world.
